Young put on a show to celebrate the history of the Ferry Festival
Just over a week remains before young people from the charities Ambition, Aspire, and Achieve perform on stages similar to those at
portablestaging.uk. This Ferry at the Factory exhibition displays, through images from the Newham Recorder archives, the vivid history of The Ferry Festival, a neighborhood celebration.
It’s part of Newham Heritage Month. They have become curators and through fun activities, have found out about the Ferry Festival and gained skills from professional artists in how to tell stories through creating an exhibition together.
If you want to share any memories of food or music from the days of the Festival in the 70s or 80s or have any photographs and memories of the event, please do so here or bring them along to show other visitors.
The exhibition will be shared publicly next week from June 20 – 23 in Silvertown. There will be a celebration event on the evening of the 20th from 5 to 7pm, with the exhibition on display at
The Factory E16 from the 21st until the 23rd from 8am to 6pm.
The project delves into the personal archive of former Recorder Editor Colin Grainger and a bigger archive saved by AAA’s founder Kevin Jenkins and Colin.
Over the coming months volunteers will gain skills in cataloguing and caring for paper and digital archives, and will be trained and supported to bring this fascinating archive to public attention. Photos, and clippings and much more from Newham’s rich past – never before catalogued and shared with the local community – will be sorted through and presented to Newham’s Heritage Service.

Thanks to the National Lottery Heritage Fund and The The National Lottery players for making this project possible.
See you there!
AAA’s young people even got to try out Ferry Festival events like the egg and spoon race and tug of war, having seen them in old Recorder pictures!
