Quiz challenge boosts Christmas Toy Appeal

The latest fund-raising event for the Community Links and Newham Recorder Christmas Toy Appeal was a resounding success last night.
The event, at Links’ headquarters in Barking Road, Canning Town, saw 15 teams battle it it out for the Maureen Allen trophy.
And there were familiar faces in the winning line-up as the Newham Blips, made up of Newham Council staff, were victorious yet again for the fourth successive year.
The trophy the teams were playing for is named after former Recorder editorial secretary Maureen Allen, who was a staunch supporter of the appeal and Links.
And quiz master, Newham councillor and Links co-founder and senior advisor Kevin Jenkins, read a moving message from Maureen’s daughter Cathy before proceedings began, praising Links’ work and for Links and the Recorder continuing to honour her mother.
The evening started with a singing performance from Links’  children and their parents and teachers.
The event raised just over £1,900 towards the campaign, which is now hitting its most crucial stage.
The total for the evening topped £2,000 with an additional £170 added on the night by former Recorder Editor Colin Grainger as a result of his annual 50-length sponsored swim.
